Indian bank branches by state
Every bank branch in India has an IFSC code, so counting codes by state shows the geography of the banking network — where it is dense, and where branches are sparse relative to population. 183,208 branches42 states
Key findings
- Maharashtra has the most bank branches (24,281), followed by Uttar Pradesh (16,337) and Tamil Nadu (14,218).
- The top five states account for 43.8% of all branches in the dataset.
- Large northern and southern states dominate the count; smaller states and union territories have far fewer branches.

What the counts mean
These counts come from the full IFSC dataset (183,208 codes); the browsable directory publishes 19,511 of the largest branch records, so a state's share here is the share of the national network, not the number of pages on the site. A high branch count reflects population, economic activity and the number of banks operating in the state. It does not measure access: a state with many branches concentrated in cities can still have large unbanked rural districts. The Reserve Bank of India publishes district-level financial inclusion data for that question.
Method
Count of IFSC codes by the state field in the Razorpay IFSC dataset (MIT licence), which mirrors the RBI branch list. Data snapshot 2026.
